MSc Physical Geography: Environmental HistoryUniversität Bremen
Kurzbeschreibung & Facts
The M. Sc. “Physical Geography: Environmental History" is a research-oriented master's program in physical geography that focuses on understanding and reconstructing environmental and climatic history. It is an interdisciplinary program that includes courses in physical and human geography, archaeology, geosciences, palaeobiology, and environmental physics. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to analyze, interpret, and evaluate the complex effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes on nature and society. Students will learn to develop their own scientific questions in close contact with ongoing research projects and work in an interdisciplinary manner. Methodological training in the field, laboratory, and computer (including GIS) will qualify them for various labor markets.
The study program is structured into four semesters. The first semester is an introductory phase with basic courses in climatology, environmental physics, geosciences, limnogeology, prehistoric archaeology, and vegetation history. The second semester is an advanced study phase where these subjects are continued and consolidated through research-based training, including field and laboratory exercises, and computer-based analyses. The third semester is an individualization phase involving project work, additional modules, and the option for study abroad or an internship. The fourth semester is the final phase where students work on their master's thesis.
General studies, internships, and study abroad are integral parts of the program. General studies can be used to fill gaps in required credits. Internships provide practical experience in professional contexts. Study abroad allows students to complete modules at international universities. The master's thesis is the final academic work for the degree.
Requirements for admission include a completed bachelor's program with 180 CP/ECTS or a comparable scientific study program related to physical geography, geology, earth sciences, geosciences, archaeology, or environmental studies. Applicants also need a letter of motivation, English language skills at level B2, basic German knowledge, a CV, and relevant certificates.
