The Master's program in Linguistics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of current linguistic theories and methods. The program focuses on building a scientific profile in areas such as text and discourse processing, typology and fieldwork, language change, and sign language research. Students will develop skills in independent research and interdisciplinary work.
The program builds upon a Bachelor's program in Linguistics or philology and offers in-depth knowledge in empirical and theoretical linguistics. It emphasizes the empirical turn in linguistics, including experimental and corpus-based methods, and theoretical approaches in the generative tradition. The program elaborates on four research areas: text analysis & discourse processing, typology & fieldwork, language change, and sign languages & visual communication.
Graduates of the program are qualified for work in linguistic research and in fields outside of research institutes that require a scientifically founded approach to languages and language structures. These fields include research administration, media, publishing houses, educational institutes, information technology, and culture management. The program also provides a basis for doctoral studies.
The degree program can be studied in three different profiles:
The program structure includes compulsory modules, profile-building modules, and key competencies. The Master's thesis, worth 30 credits, requires students to apply analytical and empirical skills to an individually created scientific study.
