Kurzbeschreibung & Facts

The M.Sc. Physics program at the University of Göttingen is a research-oriented program designed to prepare students for careers in research and development, as well as for doctoral studies in physics. The Faculty of Physics offers a broad and internationally recognized research spectrum, allowing students to get involved early on. The program is characterized by almost 60 renowned research groups.

The program offers several research foci, including:

  • Astrophysics and Geophysics: This area covers astrophysical objects and structures, observational, theoretical, and data analysis techniques, planetary and stellar physics, and cosmology. The geophysical branch focuses on fluid dynamics, oceanic and atmospheric circulations, and magnetic field generation.

  • Biophysics and Physics of Complex Systems: This interdisciplinary field focuses on understanding life from a quantitative perspective, measuring, simulating, and analyzing biological matter at various levels. It involves statistical mechanics, optics, computer simulations, and experimental techniques.

  • Solid State and Materials Physics: This field explores the complex interactions within condensed matter, addressing questions related to electronic correlations, emergent behavior from nano-structuring, and the production and use of complex materials.

  • Nuclear and Particle Physics: Research in this area involves high energy and ion beam physics, data analysis from experiments like the ATLAS-Detector at the LHC at CERN, and detector development.

  • Theoretical Physics: This stream covers a range of theoretical physics topics, from classical to quantum, using analytical calculations and computational approaches.

The program structure includes advanced lab courses, research seminars, and the development of scientific projects. Students have the option to choose experiments, computational projects, internships, or electronic lab courses.

Admission requires a Bachelor's degree in Physics or a related subject with at least 180 Credits, including specific credit requirements in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, or computer sciences, as well as theoretical physics. Non-EU applicants are required to take the GRE physics test. Proof of English and/or German skills is also required, depending on the applicant's native language and prior education.
