Lightweight and Materials EngineeringFH Oberösterreich
Kurzbeschreibung & Facts
The Bachelor's program in Lightweight and Materials Engineering focuses on the crucial role of material selection in product development, encompassing aspects like function, safety, lightweight design, aesthetics, cost, durability, and sustainability. It addresses the growing importance of lightweight construction and material minimization in the context of climate change, rising energy costs, and resource management. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between different materials (metals, composites, plastics), their manufacturing processes, and part design to foster innovative solutions.
Graduates will be equipped to develop high-performance structures for automotive, aerospace, and sports equipment, as well as durable consumer goods and innovative food packaging. The field of lightweight design and materials engineering is presented as a significant contributor to achieving climate, resource, and sustainability goals, offering a future-oriented industry with opportunities that combine innovation, technology, and sustainability.
The study program is designed to prepare graduates for roles such as product developers, structural or simulation engineers, and process optimization specialists. Internships, projects, and guest lectures facilitate connections with industrial and research partners. The program uniquely offers the opportunity to acquire German language skills alongside an engineering degree, enhancing employment prospects in Austria and internationally.
Key areas of study include:
- Lightweight design and simulation of lightweight structures
- Material characterization and selection
- Processing and manufacturing technologies
- Materials: metals, plastics, and composites
- Sustainability, recycling, and bionics
- Industry projects and laboratory practice
- Flexible elective module
- Two German-taught specializations in higher semesters: Lightweight Design & Composite-Materials and Materials & Process Engineering
The curriculum is taught in English for the first four semesters, with a transition to German from the fifth semester onwards. German language courses are integrated to prepare students for specializations and professional internships. The program emphasizes a broad technical education with a strong focus on practical projects, providing students with a versatile toolkit and extensive knowledge base for professional life.
