Liberal Arts and Sciences

The Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) program at the University of Freiburg offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, depending on the chosen major. This program provides an interdisciplinary approach to education, combining breadth and depth with student choice, fostering intellectual discovery and personal development within an international learning community.

The program is structured around three main components:

• Core (56 ECTS): Focuses on basic and advanced academic skills, reflections on knowledge and science, and a curriculum on Responsibility and Leadership.




• Electives (64 ECTS): Allows students to choose from a variety of options and courses, as well as undertake study projects of their own.




• Major (102 ECTS + 16 ECTS Multidisciplinarity): Provides training in a specific academic field. LAS offers four Majors: Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, Life Sciences, Governance, and Culture and History.

The standard period of study is 8 semesters, with a total scope of services amounting to 240 ECTS points. The language of instruction is English.

LAS prepares graduates for a broad range of professional fields, particularly in international environments that demand adaptability to complex challenges. Potential career paths include think tanks, academia, international organizations, politics and administration, media, and international firms. Approximately 80% of LAS graduates pursue further academic training in interdisciplinary or specialized Master's programs.

Admission to the program is restricted, with a selection procedure in place for the first semester (60 places). Key criteria include knowledge of English (at least B2 level of the CEFR), results of the university entrance qualification, and evaluation of a motivation letter and essay. Application periods vary depending on the semester.
